His editor, Shrike, takes leasure in browbeating his alcoholic wife Florence for her ast adultery, and assigning his emloyees journalistic jobs for which they have little atitude or interest. Shrike goads Adam into meeting one of his corresondents, Fay Doyle, a teary, self-itying woman who makes a lay for him. Adam is torn between his loyalty to the newsaer and his girl Justy.
