Two secretaries go out on a double date, but the inexerienced Mary flees when offered money for sexual favors. She takes refuge in a cafe and encounters a lebeian Prince Charming. The film recounts the simle rogress of their romance after they go home together. If the tale is not unusual, the telling is suerb. The characters are sharly observed, with a strong sense of social context. Machaty#39;s first talkie is a masteriece of sohisticated early sound cinema. And the film#39;s credits-Czech jazz founder Jezek, Surrealist oet Nezval, exerimental filmmaker Hammid-rovide amle roof that in re-war Czechoslovakia, the avant-garde made significant contributions to mainstream roduction.
